It’s Our Nature

CLIENT: Hathaway Dinwiddie
ROLE: Graphic Design, Photo Retouching
Executing a truly conceptual ad campaign is both challenging and incredibly satisfying when done right. Hathaway Dinwiddie is one of California’s most pre-eminent builders of such structures as The Getty Center in Los Angeles and the Transamerica Pyramid and Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Needless to say we needed an ad campaign as innovative as our client. Using simple, iconic images in nature: an ant carrying a leaf, a butterfly perched on a twig, a spider among its intricate web, we emphasized Hathaway’s innate ability to build structures that stand the test of time. I further emphasized their role as a leading builder by highlighting part of the striking picture in color with the periphery in black and white. These animal’s life purposes could not be clearer, nor could Hathaway’s ability to build structures of confidence.

CLIENT: San Francisco Chronicle
ROLE: Art Direction, Graphic Design
When the largest newspaper on the West Coast exclusively asks you to design an ad campaign to launch their new HD printer – it’s kind of a big deal. Thus was the case when the San Francisco Chronicle reached out to my agency to help launch the Color Me campaign. The requirements were straight forward: highlight the capabilities of the Chronicle’s new HD printers and discuss life in the Bay Area – all while including the “Color Me” headline. I came up with a series of splatter-effect ads that not only provided a great example of how the new high-definition printing could now express even the smallest of details crystal clear, but also each had a distinct flavor and tone that spoke to the versatility of Bay Area living.

CLIENT: Signature Properties
ROLE: Art Direction, Graphic Design
A logo can sometimes make or break the branding of a new home community. When designing the new logo for Millworks in Novato, I knew color was key in starting this brand off right and attracting the desired audience. Novato offers a rich farming history, but is quickly becoming a modern destination for many San Francisco workers. I blended this kind of contemporary nostalgia using warm tones and a welcoming and simple front door design. Since Millworks is an environmentally sustainable development, I used natural earth tones and a simple but fun font to introduce the community to Novato’s new neighbor.
